In commemoration of 2022 Human Rights Day, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres has called for a recommitment to human rights worldwide.
In his message, Guiteres highlighted the current human rights issues across the world.
According to him, “the world is facing unprecedented and interlocking challenges to human right. Civic spaces shrinking, hunger and poverty interfering with social space.”
Guterres reminded of his issuance of a “Call to Action” which puts human rights at the centre of solutions to the challenges facing the international community.
He added that the 75th anniversary of the landmark Universal Declaration on Human Rights next year must be an opportunity for action.
“Human rights are the foundation for human diginity and the cornerstone of peaceful, inclusive, fair, equal and prosperous societies.
I urge member states, civil society and others to put human right at the heart of efforts to reverse to those damaging trends,” he added.
The annual commemoration celebrates the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the 10th of December 1948.
