The United Nations Human Rights Office has sounded the alarm over a significant surge in gang violence-related deaths in Haiti, with more than 1,500 people killed so far this year alone.
The escalating gang conflicts in Haiti have reached alarming levels in recent weeks, characterized by heavily armed factions launching relentless attacks, including brazen raids on police stations and even the international airport. The gravity of the situation was underscored by the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry on March 11.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk condemned the ongoing violence, labelling the practices as “outrageous” and demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities.
A statement released on Thursday alongside a report described the situation in Haiti as “cataclysmic.” According to the UN report, a staggering 4,451 killings were documented last year, with an additional 1,554 recorded through March 22 of this year.
