The House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes has taken a decisive step by urging the arrest of executives from Binance, a leading cryptocurrency exchange platform, after they failed to attend an investigative hearing scheduled at the National Assembly Complex.
The committee, chaired by Hon. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe, had summoned Binance executives to address allegations of involvement in financing terrorism, money laundering, tax evasion, and other financial crimes.
These accusations were raised in petitions submitted by the Empowerment for Unemployed Youths and the Niger Delta Youths Council.
Despite legal representation sent by the company, the committee reiterated its stance that only the presence of Binance officials themselves would be acceptable.
Expressing dismay at the absence of Binance representatives, Hon. Onwusibe highlighted the seriousness of the allegations and stressed the importance of the executives’ personal appearance before the committee.
In response, Senator Ihenyen, representing Binance, acknowledged the committee’s deadlines and efforts to engage with the company. He explained that recent events, including the arrest of two Binance executives by Nigerian authorities, had created apprehension within the company, making it challenging to mobilize other executives to attend the hearing.
