Some shops at Kano Street, behind the Main Market in Onitsha, Anambra State have been razed by fire. The Main Market is about the biggest market in West Africa.
It was gathered that the fire started at around 1am today, and the men of the Anambra State Fire Service are on the ground battling to extinguish it.
A trader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said two blocks of shops have been razed as at the time of writing this report. He added that the fire is said to be particularly in a section of the market known as Kano Street.
As at the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
In his remarks, the chief firefighter in Anambra State, Martin Agbili, said that he promptly deployed his men in the area when he was alerted. He added that men of the fire service have refilled the fire trucks three times in an attempt to extinguish the inferno.
