The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has taken decisive action amid the deteriorating power supply situation across Nigeria by summoning the chief executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (Disco), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (Disco), and the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The power supply across the nation has seen a significant decline since the beginning of the year, attributed to various factors including outstanding debts to gas producers exceeding $1 billion, essential for operating thermal gas-fired power plants. Additionally, the vandalism of transmission towers in several regions has disrupted the power grid, leading to frequent electricity outages.
In response to the worsening situation, Minister Adelabu has directed the leaders of the aforementioned Discos and TCN to attend a meeting slated for the upcoming week.
According to a statement by Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the minister, Adelabu expressed concern over the deliberate reluctance of some distribution companies to accept power supply from TCN. He also highlighted instances of vandalism in regions including Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.
Adelabu emphasized the urgent need for repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to mitigate the ongoing power supply challenges. He directed TCN to commence immediate repair works to improve supply in affected regions.
