ASUU declares indefinite strike, reveals offer from Government

Following the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the university lecturers at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja over the weekend, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared a total and indefinite strike.

The union’s President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed the outcome of the NEC meeting in a statement titled, ‘ASUU strikes are to save public universities.’

In the statement, Osodeke said the NEC regretted that the union had experienced deceit of the highest level for over five years, adding that the government engaged ASUU in fruitless and unending negotiation without a display of fidelity.

ASUU added that some miserable, unilateral, and insulting take-it-or-leave-it offers of between thirty thousand naira and sixty thousand naira salary were thrown at the Union by the Government.

The University lecturers expressed disappointment on the attitude conveyed by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, saying he deliberately misinformed the public and reduced the current struggle of union to the payment of withheld salaries, claiming that all other contentious issues has been resolved.

ASUU noted that none of the issues that forced the Union to resume the suspended strike as listed in the December 2020 Federal Government-ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA) has been satisfactorily addressed by the Government to date.
