The Nigerian Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees (NUAAE), representing the agricultural workforce in Kwara State, has raised alarm over the concerning state of hunger and food shortages in the region.
Despite the state’s abundant potential and natural resources, Kwara is currently grappling with significant challenges in ensuring food security.
In a press statement issued by the Union’s State Chairman, Comrade David Kayode Ehindero, and shared with RoyalTimes on Wednesday, NUAAE voiced its concerns during a two-day protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The union emphasized the urgent need for Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to prioritize investments in the agricultural sector.
The statement revealed that NUAAE has proposed the establishment of a special initiative dubbed “Feed Kwara” to tackle the crisis. This initiative aims to engage agricultural professionals within the government and leverage Kwara’s vast resources of land, water, and favorable weather conditions.
Under the “Feed Kwara” initiative, the Union advocates for the creation of Farm Estates across the state. These estates would serve as dedicated platforms for skilled agricultural workers from various governmental bodies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Kwara Agriculture Development Project (ADP), the Ministry of Forestry and Environment, and local farming communities. The goal is to efficiently harness the untapped agricultural potential of Kwara State.
NUAAE passionately calls upon Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to take immediate and decisive action to address the prevailing food shortages. By investing in the agricultural sector, the Governor can not only ensure the well-being of the state’s citizens but also strengthen food security and stimulate economic growth.
