Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman took one hundred-point-five million dollars at the US/Canada box office this weekend. This is the biggest domestic debut for a female director.
Jenkins beat the previous record set by Sam Taylor-Johnson for Fifty Shades of Grey, which opened with eighty-five-point-one million dollars in 2015. Wonder Woman, starring Israeli actress Gal Gadot, has received largely positive reviews from film critics.
Hollywood is known for its reluctance to hire female directors, especially for blockbuster superhero movies. Wonder Woman is the first female-led superhero film to be directed by a woman.
Wonder Woman was also number one in the UK, earning six-point-one-eight million pounds over the weekend. However, that was not enough to beat Sam Taylor-Wood’s thirteen-point-five million pounds opening weekend for Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015.
