US President Donald Trump has accused China of seeking to meddle in the November sixth US congressional elections, saying Beijing didn’t want his Republican Party to do well because of his hardline stance on trade.
Trump said this at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday. Trump did not provide any evidence for his allegation. China rejected the charge, saying it did not and will not interfere in any country’s domestic affairs. China and the US have been in a battle over tariffs since his election.
Trump’s focus on China and his allegation of election meddling came as a surprise during a formal meeting around the Security Council’s iconic horseshoe, which was expected to concentrate on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
Mr Trump later took to Twitter to post photographs of newspaper extracts which he described as Chinese “propaganda”. When asked at a press conference if he had any evidence of Chinese interference, he said he could not divulge the proof but that it would emerge.
