The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Kwara state council, has sent a ‘Save Our Soul’ message to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq over the critical needs in the health sector.
The health workers in a letter signed by its State Secretary, Comrade Marcus Luka and addressed to the Governor, the Nurses and Midwives are demanding employment of more workforce and upward salary review to avoid industrial action.
They commended the state government for employing 90 nurses, renovation of health facilities, prompt payment of workers’ salary and counterpart funds for the primary health care programme.
They however noted that the efforts made so far is still a far cry from the challenges facing the sector.
NANNM noted that the nurses recruited cannot fill the vacuum left behind by the workers who have either retired or left for greener pastures due to poor remuneration.
While noting that the development has led to work overload, the body said about two nurses now attend to thirty patients, a situation that has led to work stress and admission of seven nurses at the moment.
The nurses and Midwives also identified the poor remuneration of health workers in kwara compared to several states and federal health institutions as the reason why workers are leaving in droves.
They therefore demanded for recruitment of more workers and an upward review of CONHESS salary scale failure which the state and local government health workers may be left with no choice but to down tools.
