Imo deputy speaker resigns a day after lawmakers suspended speaker

The deputy speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly Ugonna Ozurigbo has tendered his resignation letter. The resignation came less than twenty four hours after twenty one out of the twenty seven state lawmakers served impeachment notices on the speaker, Acho Ihim and the majority leader, Lugard Osuji.

According to earlier reports, the suspended two principal officers had engaged in unparliamentarily conduct by escaping with the mace during the Wednesday’s plenary.

The lawmakers then elected Chinedu Offor as the acting speaker and Lloyd Chukwuemeka representing Owerri North the new majority leader.

The letter of resignation which Ozurigbo personally signed was sighted by news men in Owerri this morning and was received by the office of the Clark of the state House of Assembly on May 16.
