Nigerians have reacted with anger, shock, and disbelief following the reinstatement of the executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf, by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Yusuf was reinstated on Tuesday, according to a circular issued to the health ministry by the chief of staff to the president, Abba Kyari. The Minister of health, Isaac Adewole had suspended Yusuf on the sixth of July, 2017 over allegations of fraud leveled against him.
Incidentally, Yusuf was grilled by the men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday when his letter of reinstatement was sent to the Federal Ministry of Health. Yusuf, who is being probed by the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, was accused of perpetrating fraud to the tune of nine hundred and nineteen million naira.
A committee set up by the minister of health to probe the allegations had reported that Yusuf contravened the Procurement Act of 2007 through nepotism and other irregular award of contracts and should be sanctioned in line with the provision of the Act.
Meanwhile, some Nigerians have urged the health minister to resign in protest of Yusuf’s reinstatement, while others have described the development as a tacit condoning of alleged corruption by the presidency.
