A United States military aircraft with eight personnel on board has crashed off Yakushima Island in Japan.
The Japanese coast guard said that local fishermen have found one person whose condition remains unclear while local media quoted officials who said the remains of the plane have likely been found off Yakushima.
Local media also said that the CV-22 Osprey was trying to land at Yakushima Airport, adding that the left engine was on fire.
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said the aircraft disappeared from radar at 2:40pm local time before coast guards received a distress call seven minutes later, saying the plane had crashed.
