The United Nations has issued a stark warning, declaring Sudan to be in the grip of one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent memory.
With nearly a year of ongoing conflict, the nation faces dire consequences as tens of thousands of lives have been lost and the specter of famine looms large, compounded by a lack of international intervention.
Since April of the previous year, clashes between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), under the leadership of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, have ravaged the country.
The toll on human life and displacement is staggering, with Edem Wosornu, the director of operations at the UN Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), characterizing the situation as catastrophic during an address to the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
Worsonu said, “By all measures – the sheer scale of humanitarian needs, the numbers of people displaced and facing hunger Sudan is one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent memory,” Edem Wosornu, director of operations at the UN Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said on Wednesday.
“A humanitarian travesty is playing out in Sudan under a veil of international inattention and inaction,” Wosornu told the UN Security Council on behalf of OCHA head Martin Griffiths.
“Simply put, we are failing the people of Sudan,” she added, describing the population’s “desperation.”
