…As Health commissioner confirms reported cases, 2 deaths from dreaded disease
Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has approved the procurement of additional commodities for effective prevention and management of the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state, including free treatment and feeding of suspected and confirmed cases on admission.
This was disclosed by the state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Gana while briefing journalists in Gombe.
The Commissioner confirmed the death of two persons out of the seven suspected cases recorded.
He said among the two dead, one had been confirmed to be Lassa Fever while the confirmation to what may have caused the death of the other is still being awaited.
The commissioner however said the second confirmed case of Lassa fever brought in from Ibbi Local government area of Taraba State has been treated and discharged from the isolation centre of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
“I can tell you that the confirmed Lassa Fever fatality was brought in from Bayo Local Government Area of Borno State while the unconfirmed fatality was a resident of Gombe State.
Dr. Ahmed Gana said at the moment, the four suspected Lassa Fever cases are undergoing treatment at the isolation centre of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
He said sequel to this development, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has approved the procurement of additional commodities for effective prevention and management of the outbreak in the state.
While calling on the people of the state to embibe the spirit of personal and environmental hygiene, the commissioner said all emergency units of the Ministry have been re-activated to respond to reported cases anywhere in the state.
