The Kwara Correctional Centre has refuted claims circulating in the media regarding an incident involving an inmate allegedly seizing a warder’s rifle and shooting a bystander.
Initial reports suggested that a prisoner at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, had taken control of a guard’s firearm and fired shots, injuring a roadside vulcanizer near the facility.
However, the spokesperson for the Ilorin Correctional Centre, Adegbulugbe Philip, in an interview with RoyalFM, clarified that the individual involved in the incident is not an inmate at the Correctional Centre.
Instead, Philip revealed that the perpetrator is a 28-year-old resident of Kwara State who was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
According to Philip, the individual was engaged in disruptive behavior, throwing stones at passing vehicles and tricycles. In response to this disturbance, officers from the correctional centre intervened to de-escalate the situation. During the intervention, the individual attacked and injured one of the warders from the correctional centre. The injured warder is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Furthermore, Philip emphasized that the individual responsible for the altercation has been apprehended and is currently detained at the ‘C’ Division Police Station, Isale-Ojo, in Ilorin.
