The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that new Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be made available next month.
According to INEC, about 2.7 million double registrations were also deleted from the Voters Register in order to make it credible.
INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who said this at a National Endowment for Democracy event in Washington DC, United States, said about 50 per cent of the new PVCs were ready and will be distributed to collection centres in November, this year.
He said;” Those who registered twice, those who are underage or those who have no reason to register as provided by law had been withered out. The exercise was completed few days ago, we have not shared the information with Nigerians but we have two point seven million invalid registers withered out. we will continue to check whatever is necessary to protect the integrity of the registrars of voters because it’s fundamental to the conduct of the credible election. There cant be credible election without credible registeration of voters”
He also raised concerns about the rising level of insecurity across the country, saying that the Commission has its “fingers crossed” and added that they have received assurance from security agencies that the situation will improve before the elections.
