A French court has commenced proceedings against six teenagers implicated in the shocking beheading of French history teacher Samuel Paty in 2020.
Samuel Paty, 47, met a gruesome end outside his school in a Paris suburb after he showed caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad during a class on freedom of expression.
During questioning, the teenagers asserted that their actions were not intended to lead to murder. They claimed they thought at most Paty would be exposed on social media, face humiliation, or potentially be roughed up.
In a statement through their lawyer Louis Cailliez, Paty’s sister Mickaelle emphasized the profound impact of the teenagers’ actions, asserting that her brother would still be alive “without a fatal association of small cowardices, big lies.
The hearings, due to last until December 8, will be held behind closed doors. Eight adults are also accused and will appear before a special criminal court.
