The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, has expressed doubts over reports that rice farmers have endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term by donating one-point-seven billion naira to his re-election campaign.
The chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Aminu Goronyo, said every member of the association numbering about twelve-point-two million people, donated one hundred naira each to the campaign, which translates to one-point-two billion naira, while the Fertilisers Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria gave five hundred and seventy million naira to the re-election bid of the president.
However, Secondus speaking at a town hall meeting in Abia State, questioned the credibility of the statement saying farmers had vacated their lands because of the clashes with herdsmen which the Buhari government has yet to effectively tackle.
He said the murder of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, retired Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, had shown the level of insecurity that Nigeria had descended into under Buhari.
Secondus said when the PDP handed over power to the All Progressives Congress, Nigeria had the best performing economy in Africa. He, however, stated that in less than three years of the APC, Nigeria was named the poverty capital of the world.
