The United States House Committee on Energy and Commerce is set to vote on a bill that could compel ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to sell off its ownership within six months or face a US ban.
The bipartisan legislation aims to address national security concerns linked to Chinese ownership of the app.
Despite assurances from supporters that the bill is not a ban but a strategic move to safeguard national interests, TikTok’s spokesperson criticized it as an outright ban that could infringe on the First Amendment rights of millions.
While the Biden administration expressed support for addressing tech threats, the bill’s passage in an election year remains uncertain, especially given TikTok’s popularity and bipartisan concerns over constitutional issues.
