The United States Senate has passed a bill that could lead to the banning of TikTok in the United States if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, fails to sell the app within the next nine to twelve months.
The legislation, fueled by concerns over data security and surveillance by the Chinese government, follows a similar measure passed by the House of Representatives. President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law on Wednesday.
Senator Marco Rubio, a leading Republican on the Intelligence Committee, stated that allowing a Chinese-owned app like TikTok to control American user data was “dangerously shortsighted.”
However, the American Civil Liberties Union has raised concerns about First Amendment violations and warned that this move could set a troubling precedent for government control over social media.
