Qatar has revealed ambitious plans to significantly expand output from the world’s largest natural gas field, signaling a major boost to its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity.
At a press conference on Sunday, Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, announced the launch of the new North Field expansion project, named North Field West.
This expansion initiative aims to increase liquefied natural gas production capacity by 16 million tonnes per year, adding to existing expansion efforts.
Al-Kaabi disclosed that recent studies have revealed substantial additional gas reserves in the North Field, estimated at 240 trillion cubic feet. This discovery raises Qatar’s total gas reserves to over 2,000 trillion cubic feet, paving the way for further development of the North Field’s western sector.
Once completed by the end of the decade, the new expansion project will raise Qatar’s production capacity to 142 million tonnes annually, representing an impressive 85 percent increase from current levels.
