In response to the ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of N585 million by the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Dr. Betta Edu, the Presidency has called for caution and patience from Nigerians, cautioning against engaging in a media trial.
Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, revealed on Monday that President Bola Tinubu had sanctioned the release of N3 billion for the verification of the National Social Register during the former administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
The social register was established for cash transfers and other social investment programs under Buhari.
A memo dated December 18, 2023, from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, confirmed President Tinubu’s approval of the expenditure for the verification of the National Social Register, utilizing funds from the Covid-19 Palliative Fund.
“Let us allow them to do their work. Let us not to be doing a double investigation on the same issue or a media trial on an issue that is under investigation. Nigerians should exercise patience.
“When the EFCC is done with their findings, they will tender their report to the President who will then act on the result of the investigation.”
Speaking to The PUNCH, Onanuga emphasized the ongoing investigation into the matter by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He urged Nigerians to exercise patience and refrain from conducting parallel investigations or engaging in a media trial on a matter already under investigation.
