The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, expressed deep concern over the increasing number of Nigerian university lecturers sponsored abroad by TETFund who have absconded, terming the situation “alarming.”
According to Punch, Echono made the revelation during the TETFund Management retreat held in Makurdi, Benue State, on Monday.
Addressing journalists, he stated that the board is considering two approaches, described as “soft and hard measures,” to address the issue.
“What we are doing, first as a soft landing, we are requiring anybody who have benefitted from our programme and do not come back to make the full refund of the money expended in training them. The other option which is the harder one is that we are collaborating with our embassies, the embassies of the country where they are and the institutions.” He said.
The Executive Secretary disclosed that TETFund would either demand a refund of the funds spent on the absconded lecturers or explore the possibility of repatriating them.
