The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) successfully rescued a construction worker who was trapped in a collapsed building under construction in Abuja.
The incident occurred when a section of a building, still in the construction phase near Taj Bank in the Central Business District, collapsed at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Mr. Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs at FEMA, provided details of the incident in a statement released in Abuja.
According to her, the worker became trapped when the cast of the first floor collapsed on him while he was engaged in construction activities.
The statement noted that after the unsuccessful attempts by fellow construction workers to free the trapped colleague, FEMA was alerted to the situation around 4:00 p.m.
“FEMA’s Search and Rescue Team and the FCT Fire Service responded to the distress call and were able to rescue the trapped man with the aid of extrication equipment and the construction company’s excavator,” Mrs. Isa said.
Following the prompt response, the victim was successfully rescued and subsequently transported to the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja, for necessary medical attention.
