A High Court in Port Harcourt has officially recognized Edison Ehie as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
This confirmation, according to the Guardian, comes in the wake of a political crisis that led to Ehie’s impeachment in October, a period marked by efforts to unseat Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The announcement of Ehie’s removal in October came from Speaker Martins Amaehwule, who cited the Majority Leader’s absence from a legislative session as the grounds for his impeachment.
However, the tide turned on Tuesday as the court not only validated Edison Ehie’s claim to the speakership but also issued a restraining order against Martins Amaehwule and Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol, prohibiting them from portraying themselves as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Furthermore, the court cautioned against the use of forceful means, including the deployment of thugs and police officers, to gain access to the State’s Assembly Complex.
