In the wake of a tragic stampede that resulted in loss of lives at the Nigeria Customs Service Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos State, the Nigeria Customs Service has announced the suspension of the sale of seized food items to Nigerians.
The decision to halt the sale was communicated in a statement issued on Monday by Abdullahi Maiwada, a spokesperson for Customs, following the unfortunate incident that occurred on Friday.
The statement expressed regret over the unfortunate event and highlighted the importance of establishing the facts surrounding the stampede before proceeding with any further action.
The Customs Service emphasized the need to conduct a thorough inquiry to understand the events leading to the stampede, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
“Considering the recent unfortunate event, we regrettably announce the suspension of this exercise until we establish what transpired on Friday, 23 February 2024,” Nigeria Customs, however, announced on Monday.
“This should help us to properly articulate more robust and comprehensive action that will not defeat the noble intention,” the statement partly reads.
