The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) has condemned the actions of the Rivers State Government, following an allegation of wanton destruction of multi-billion Naira broadcasting equipment belonging to Daar Communications Plc, the parent company of African Independent Television (AIT).
According to a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose, the alleged demolition, which took place in Port-Harcourt, has been described as a “brazen exhibition of dictatorial power” and an “ominous signal to democracy.”
It would be recalled that the dispute over the land where the AIT equipment was situated has been a long-standing issue between Daar Communications, the Rivers State Government and BON.
Royaltimes reported that the broadcasting commission said that due to the fact that the case is currently pending before a Court of law, the government’s actions are even more controversial.
The BON, however, called on the Federal Government to intervene, asserting that it represents a deliberate violation of the rule of law by government branches while sharing its concern about the use of federal government apparatus to intimidate the media and the tendency of governments to disregard court orders.
