Barcelona President Laporta Reportedly Charged With Bribery over Referee Payments

written by Royal Times of Nigeria October 18, 2023

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been reportedly charged by a Spanish court with suspected bribery over referee payments.

According to Spanish media, the payments were made to companies linked to the former vice president of the refereeing committee, José María Enríquez Negreira.

The charges relate to Laporta’s first spell in charge at Barcelona between 2003 and 2010 and the club president has however said the payments were for “technical reports about referees” and has repeatedly denied the Spanish giants have ever bought referees or influence.
