Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has reiterated the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture to address the escalating insecurity plaguing the nation.
As reported by Dailypost, Atiku’s call for action comes in response to the recent release of students abducted from Kuriga in Kaduna State, expressing relief at their safe return while stressing the imperative of fortifying the country’s security framework to effectively combat prevailing threats.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Atiku commended the efforts of those involved in securing the release of the kidnapped students and emphasized the importance of bolstering the Safe School Initiative, which aims to safeguard educational institutions across the country.
Expressing empathy for the trauma endured by the abducted students, Atiku emphasized the necessity of providing them with psychotherapeutic support from trained professionals to aid in their recovery from the harrowing experience.
He wrote: “I am elated at the news of the release of the 287 abducted schoolchildren in Kaduna after 16 days in captivity. I commend all those who worked tirelessly to make their release a reality.”
“As we celebrate with their families and friends, let’s be mindful that, like stage four cancer, this state of insecurity that has befallen our nation is metastasizing and needs proactive measures to stem it.”
“I can only imagine the trauma that these vulnerable children have suffered. It is recommended that the children receive psychotherapeutic care from professionals.”
“We also do not need to wait for the next incident before putting mechanisms in place to forestall it. To this end, I recommend strengthening the Safe School Initiative that prioritizes the protection of schools, especially in the areas that are most vulnerable to mass kidnapping of schoolchildren. But above all, there should be an overhaul of the security architecture to meet the demands of the threats facing us.”
