A deadly communal clash between the Montol and Taroh ethnic groups has erupted in the Ponglong community of Mikang local government area, Plateau State, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and widespread destruction of property.
According to Dailytrust, at least nine individuals have been killed in the violence, which initially began as a dispute between two individuals but quickly spiraled out of control, fueled by the involvement of angry youths and criminal elements.
Confirming the incident, Hon. Daniel Kungmi, the Transition Chairman of the council, described how the clash escalated rapidly, leading to the burning of numerous houses and barns, and causing displacement among the residents, particularly women.
“Immediately we got the news of the clash , we called on security operatives who moved swiftly to the affected community to restore law and order. I just returned from the community and the situation is under control, but we can not ascertain the number of persons killed in the clash. I call on the people to be more tolerable and cautious of undesirable elements that might want to take advantage of the unfortunate situation to inflict harm on innocent persons,” the chairman added.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the Plateau State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
