In a move to address concerns over financial mismanagement within the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action, suspending the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Salihijo, and three Executive Directors.
According to reports, the suspension comes following the uncovering of alarming financial discrepancies amounting to over N1.2 billion during a thorough investigation into the agency’s financial activities.
According to a statement released by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the decision to suspend Salihijo and his colleagues was made in light of new findings unearthed during the investigation.
The suspended officials include Executive Director, Corporate Services, Olaniyi Netufo; Executive Director, Technical Services, Barka Sajou; and Executive Director, Rural Electrification Fund, Sa’adatu Balgore.
To ensure continuity in the agency’s operations, Tinubu has appointed an interim management team. Abba Aliyu will step in as the Acting Managing Director/CEO, with Ayoade Gboyega, Umar Umar, and Doris Uboh serving as Acting Executive Directors for Corporate Services, Technical Services, and Rural Electrification Fund respectively. Additionally, Olufemi Akinyelure has been appointed as the Head of the Project Management Unit for the Nigeria Electrification Project.
The President “expects all appointees in his administration to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability in the discharge of their duties and reiterates his determination to elevate the yearnings of Nigerians for good governance and qualitative service delivery above the narrow interests of individuals who are entrusted to provide critical services to the Nigerian people,” the statement concluded.
