In the midst of escalating tensions over soaring food prices, a demonstration turned chaotic on Thursday as agitators reportedly commandeered a trailer loaded with essential food supplies along the Suleja-Kaduna road in Niger State.
According to reports, eyewitnesses recounted the unrest, detailing how protesters wrested control of the trailer, laden with rice and other provisions, by overpowering the driver and pilfering from its cargo.
Security forces, including soldiers, police, and civil defense personnel, later intervened, dispersing the protesters with tear gas after arriving at the scene.
Confirming the incident, state police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun revealed that the Suleja Area Commander, ACP Sani Musa, promptly dispatched patrol units to quell the disturbance, ensuring the thoroughfare’s swift reopening.
“There was a protest this morning along Kaduna road, Suleja, and the protest plan was not communicated to the Police, it was later discovered to be hijacked by some miscreants who blocked the highway.
“Area Commander Suleja, ACP Sani Musa mobilised patrol teams to the scene, dispersed the protesters and the highway was cleared for free flow of traffic, however, monitoring continues,” Abidun said.
