Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and Asue Ighodalo, supported by Governor Godwin Obaseki, emerged as the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following parallel indirect primary elections held at separate locations in Benin, the state capital.
Shaibu secured victory with 301 out of 563 authentic delegates, while Ighodalo emerged as the standard bearer with 577 votes, defeating other aspirants, including Anselm Ojezua, Arthur Esele, Osaro Onaiwu, Martins Uhomoibhi, Hadizat Umoru, and Felix Akhabue, who received zero votes.
According to reports, the Chief Returning Officer, Dauda Lawal, Governor of Zamfara State, announced Ighodalo’s victory, assisted by Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator James Manager, Vice Chairman and Secretary of the committee, respectively.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has provided clarification regarding the substitution of Governor Hope Uzodinma with Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State as the chairman of the Edo state governorship primary election.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, addressed reporters in Abuja, explaining that the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) had prior national commitments that necessitated his replacement before the rescheduled completion of the Edo shadow election on Thursday.
