In a decisive move against the proliferation of fake drugs and beverages, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down no fewer than 240 shops at the Cemetery Road Market in Aba, Abia State.
The operation, carried out in the first two weeks of December 2023, resulted in the confiscation of counterfeit drugs and products with an estimated value exceeding N700 million, as disclosed by Prof. Moji Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC.
Expressing concern over the surge in counterfeiting activities across the country, Prof. Adeyeye, according to Vanguard, highlighted the need for heightened vigilance among consumers.
She emphasized the severe health risks associated with consuming these fake products, including beverages and consumables, urging citizens to exercise caution in their purchases.
“Overall the product itself must be checked to ensure that it is not contaminated or a bad one. The World Health Organization (WHO) study in 2019 shows that alcohol consumption is tied to various cancers.” She said.
