The Sport Writers Association of Nigeria, Kwara Chapter has disclosed plans to boycott the clash between Kwara United and Shooting Stars at the Ilorin Stadium on Sunday.
The Sport Writers, according to a statement signed by its secretary, Dare Kuti said the sport journalists decided to boycott the game due to security concern and threat to their lives.
“This is to notify members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter that we are boycotting the match between Kwara United versus Shooting Stars on Sunday (12th November, 2023) due to security reasons and threat to lives. “
Recall that the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter, had earlier condemned in strong terms the attack on its former Chairmen, Jimoh Bashir, Waheed Bibire; CAF accredited photo-journalists, Abdul Momoh and Adeyemi Oluwafemi, and a member, Victor Michael by the players of Police Machine FC on Saturday, 11th November, 2023.
The members were assaulted at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin, Kwara State after the final of the Emir’s Football Cup Competition between Police Machine and Musty FC.
Reacting to the attack, the Police Force, through a statement by SP Ajayi Okasanmi, who is acting as the spokesperson of the force until an appointment is made said the commissioner of Police, CP Victor Olaiya condemned the actions of its representatives and promised to conduct investigation into the incident.
“I have brought this issue to the attention of the commissioner of police, and he is very upset with the action of the policemen involved. While directing a discreet investigation into the matter and a possible meeting with the assaulted journalists, I want to personally apologize on behalf of the command and plead that you exercise patience until the incident is investigated and resolved.”
“Meanwhile, I want to plead that this particular incident must not truncate the existing cordial relationship between the command and the press in the state. Thanks.”
