An advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, has asked the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, to provide it with detailed information on how much his administration has spent on primary education in the state since 2015.
In a statement on Sunday by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP said its request was informed by the case of Success Adegor, who was sent home from school for being unable to pay.
The group said it is aware that since coming on board, Okowa’s administration had received seven-point-eight billion naira from Universal Basic Education Commission, apart from other funds from the Federal Government.
SERAP said that the evidence of education deficit in the state is buttressed by the case of Success Adegor, who was sent home because her parents could not pay the illegal school fee/levy of nine hundred naira and the poor quality education infrastructure of her school, Okotie-Eboh Primary School 1, Sapele. SERAP urge the governor to provide details of specific projects carried out to improve access to free and quality primary education in the state.
The group expected Okowa to oblige its request for information within seven days, failing which it would take a legal action against the governor.
