Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, has called upon the United States of America and the United Kingdom to take responsibility for peace in the Middle East amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
In a statement posted on his personal X handle on Sunday, Onanuga emphasized the crucial role that the US and UK must play in ensuring that Israeli responses to Iranian drones and missiles remain proportionate. He clarified that his views were personal and did not represent the stance of the Presidency, where he serves.
As reported by Dailypost, the recent surge in hostilities between Israel and Iran was triggered by an unprecedented air attack from Iran in retaliation for an Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria.
While Israel’s formidable air defenses, aided by the US military and other allies, largely neutralized the Iranian assault, Onanuga warned of the potential for further escalation.
Expressing concern over the possibility of the conflict spiraling out of control, Onanuga urged the UK and US to step in as mediators. He stressed the importance of exercising caution, particularly in light of the unresolved tensions in Gaza, emphasizing that the world cannot afford another war in the volatile Middle East region.
