The United Nations refugee agency has revealed that over two thousand five hundred people have died or gone missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe in 2023.
The UN further stated that about one hundred and eighty-five thousand people have arrived in European countries during the same period.
Ruven Menikdiwela, director of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in New York, told the UN Security Council on Thursday that of the one hundred and eighty-five thousand who had crossed the Mediterranean, eighty-three percent, amounting to about one hundred and thirty Thousand people landed in Italy.
Ruven further stated that othet countries where people who had crossed the Mediterranean had landed included Greece, Spain, Cyprus and Malta.
