Abdulkareem Fatai, a fifty-year-old resident of Ita Olodan Upper Gaa Akanbi, found himself facing charges of assault and causing grievous hurt as he was arraigned in the Upper Area Court in Ganmo, Kwara State.
The charges stem from an altercation with one Muhammed Yusuf over a payment dispute regarding flour.
The court session convened on Monday to address the charges against Fatai, who faced two counts related to the incident with Muhammed Yusuf.
The dispute reportedly arose from a disagreement over the sum of Six Thousand Eight Hundred Naira concerning a flour transaction.
According to the police’s first information report, the incident dates back to March 1st, 2015, when Fatai purchased flour worth 6,800 Naira from Alhaja Bashirat Abdulkareem.
However, Yusuf insisted on paying only six thousand Naira, leading to a heated exchange between the two parties.
Allegedly trailing Yusuf home, Fatai purportedly assaulted him in a fit of rage, resulting in grievous injuries to Yusuf’s right ear. These actions are said to violate Sections 265 and 241 of the Penal Code Law, which address assault and causing grievous hurt.
During the arraignment, the prosecutor, Inspector Olajide Emmanuel, prayed the court to exercise its discretion in admitting the defendant to bail.
Fatai pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him, with his counsel, M.O Aminu, requesting the court to allow him to continue with the earlier bail granted by the previous panel.
Presiding over the case, Chief Judge Honorable Adam Suleimon listened to both parties and decided in favor of the defendant, allowing him to continue enjoying the bail condition. The case was adjourned for further mention, with the next hearing scheduled for April 23rd, 2024.
