Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has asserted that Nigeria is not yet “mature” for the establishment of state police. He made this statement at a national dialogue on state police organized by the House of Representatives in Abuja on Monday, with the theme ‘Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria’.
Represented by Ben Okolo, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Egbetokun conveyed the stance of the police leadership, emphasizing that the country is not ready for the decentralization of policing powers to states.
“It is the submission of the leadership of the Nigeria police force that Nigeria is yet to mature and ready for the establishment of state-controlled police,”
“In view of this, the police leadership rather is recommending the following instead of creating state police”.
Egbetokun proposed an alternative approach, suggesting the merger of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) into a department within the police force.
“First, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety to form a department under the Nigerian police.”
it was reported that he argued that this consolidation would enhance efficiency and coordination in law enforcement efforts.
