A container ship collided with a major bridge in Baltimore, causing a catastrophic collapse into the Patapsco River, according to Maryland Governor Wes Moore. The incident occurred on Tuesday, resulting in the bridge collapsing into the water along with vehicles and individuals.
Authorities have launched a massive search operation for six missing individuals, believed to be part of a construction crew repairing potholes on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Two individuals have been rescued from the water.
The container ship, which is now lodged in debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, encountered a “power issue” and issued a distress call moments before the collision, officials reported. However, due to its speed, the vessel was unable to alter its course.
Governor Moore assured that the bridge will be reconstructed “in a way that remembers the people this tragedy has impacted.” President Biden pledged full federal support for the reconstruction efforts, promising to cover the “entire cost” of rebuilding the bridge and restoring functionality to the port.
