Former US President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to conspiring to overturn his 2020 presidential election defeat in a Washington DC court.
Appearing for a short arraignment, Trump maintained that he was not under the influence of any substance, saying the case was “persecution of a political opponent.”
Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya told the Former President not to communicate the facts of the case while the Prosecutors said hearing the case would benefit from a speedy trial.
Trump’s defence attorney John Lauro stated that they would need more time to prepare, adding that the prosecution’s timeline was “somewhat absurd” given that the investigation itself had taken three years.
After losing the 2020 election to Joe Biden, Trump refused to concede defeat, mounting weeks of challenges across several US states and said that his arraignment was a “very sad day for America.
