The Federal Government, alongside the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), have refuted recent assertions regarding the alleged reinstatement of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
Their statements come in response to claims made by various individuals, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, regarding the purported return of subsidy.
Addressing the issue, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, emphasized the government’s stance on the matter, stressing that subsidy on petrol had been abolished, as declared by President Bola Tinubu.
The minister said, “I don’t want to delve into that issue. It is a very sensitive issue. It is better we get all the facts. As far as I’m concerned, the President removed the subsidy and it remains removed till today. Anybody who is saying that subsidy is being paid, it is left for the person to bring the facts and then we will talk about them.”
Similarly, the NNPC echoed the government’s position, asserting that it had ceased subsidizing petrol and was recovering its full costs on imported petroleum products. Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, reiterated that there was no reinstatement of subsidy, contrary to recent claims.
