European lawmakers have thrown their weight behind a call to incorporate access to abortion into the European Union’s Charter of Fundamental Rights. This move comes in the wake of France’s recent constitutional amendment enshrining the right to abortion.
In a symbolic gesture, the European Parliament approved a non-binding resolution with 336 votes in favour and 163 against, garnering support from centrist and left-wing factions.
However, despite the endorsement from the European Parliament, the likelihood of including the right to “safe and legal abortion” in the EU’s legally-binding charter remains slim. Such an inclusion would necessitate unanimous agreement among the EU’s 27 member states, presenting a significant hurdle.
