In the wake of a tragic accident that claimed three lives and left eight others injured along the Oko-Olowo-Jebba expressway in Ilorin, the Kwara State Fire Service has issued a stern warning to motorists to adhere to driving rules and prioritize safety on the roads.
The incident occurred on Monday, January 15, 2024, at approximately 14:46 hours when the Kwara State Fire Service received an emergency call reporting a fire outbreak at Emperor Hospital along the expressway.
The accident involved a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), a truck loaded with soft drinks, and another truck loaded with soybeans.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated from a head-on collision between the petrol tanker, whose driver lost control, and the truck carrying soybeans. Tragically, three lives were lost in the accident, and eight individuals sustained injuries among the 20 people on board the vehicles.
Despite the severity of the situation, the swift response and efforts of the firemen from the Kwara State Fire Service resulted in the successful containment of the fire. Their prompt action prevented further damage, preserving not only the hospital but also nearby buildings.
In a statement issued by the Head of Department, Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and emphasized the critical importance of road users adhering to safe driving practices.
“Tragedies like these highlight the urgent need for all road users to prioritize safety on the roads. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder that adhering to driving rules and safety measures is not just a responsibility but a necessity,” said Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa.
The fire service director urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid over-speeding, and ensure that their vehicles are in proper working condition.
