The call was made during a 3-day media training organized by both Non-Governmental Organizations, which wrapped up on Friday.
Speaking at the event, the Coordinator of Reproductive Health at the Kwara State Ministry of Health, Dr. Kafayat Ibrahim revealed the roles that journalists could play in bringing this vision to life.
“Even if the service is available,readily available but without a demand driven approach to ensure that people know about getting it, it is not likely to have good services. So,one of the key areas that we realized that we have is in the area of media. So,we realized that our media are also like champions and ambassadors to help advocate for family planning.”
“Number one is to increase the reportage on the thematic subject which is family planning and to train journalists on effective reporting techniques and we are doing that through presentations, featuring and putting them in a group so that they can further continue their work”, he said.
The State Project Manager of the Challenge Initiative, Dr. Wale Adefila spoke on the roles TCI have been playing in improving family planning services in Kwara state.
“Since TCI came into the state two and a half years ago,TCI has provided technical support to the family planning empowerment for the unit of the State Ministry of Health and strengthening the capacity of the staff and also ensuring that there is adequate awareness in the state. So, ranging from things around, community organization, community awareness, ensuring that quality service be provided in our facilities. We are too notch as regards family planning.”
The 3-day media personnel training was attended by journalists from the broadcast, print and online industry in Kwara.
