The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has joined other Nigerians to urge the Federal Government to ensure that justice was done for late Miss Ochanya Ogbanje, allegedly raped by her guardian, fifty-one-year-old Andrew Ogboja, a lecturer at Benue State Polytechnic, and his son Victor in Gboko, Benue state.
The Chairman of National Ad hoc Committee on Gender Violence and other Related Issues of NMA, Dr Godwin Tijani, made the call in a statement in Lokoja today. He said that justice to the deceased thirteen-year-old girl, would be justice to millions of women across the world, who are victims of gender violence.
Tijani said that NMA takes rape as a crime against humanity and insisted that government and other stakeholders should do the needful and bring the alleged perpetrators of the act to justice. He reiterated the urgent need for Nigerians to rise against all forms of gender-based violence in the country.
The late Ochanya died of Vesicovaginal Fistula and other related complications that arose from alleged serial vagina and anal sexual abuses by the father and son. The alleged rape was said to have started when the deceased was 8 years old.
