The Kwara State Government has again stated that it is not responsible for the payment of arrears of local government Councillors. The clarification was made in reaction to Monday’s protest by the former local government Councillors outside Government House, demanding payment of their arrears.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mahmud Ajeigbe, the state government said though, the plight of the protesting ex Councillors is unfortunate especially during these difficult times, their protests must be channeled to the individual local councils owing them.
Ajeigbe noted that the Councillors served local government councils, a separate tier of government which gets it allocation directly from the Federal Government as does the state government.
He however added that the Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed’s administration stands ready to support the councils to pay these arrears and others. Ajeigbe recalled that the state government recently released a sum of two billion naira to the local council from the recent Paris Club Refund towards offsetting the arrears owed political office holders.
