Eleven workers lost their lives and seventy-five others sustained injuries in an accident at a platinum mine in Rustenburg, South Africa.
The mine, operated by Impala Platinum, witnessed a grim turn of events when a winding rope connected to a lift, responsible for transporting workers up and down the mine shaft, unexpectedly moved downward, leading to the tragic loss of lives.
Nico Muller, the chief executive of Impala Platinum, expressed the gravity of the situation, labeling it as the “darkest day” in the company’s history.
The mine, located approximately 100km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, experienced the accident this week, adding to the concerns over safety conditions in South Africa’s deep mines.
